Coaching, as a toolset or discipline, provides a different way to frame the conversations we have. It is one that demands our acceptance that the other person in the conversation is the only thing that matters. It requires that we set aside our own notions of what the problem might be and how to fix it, an action in itself that can be quite challenging for a race of problem-solving primates.

My reflections with my children led to thinking about agile ways of working and ultimately to Open Space Technology or simply Open Space. The flexibility but power of an Open Space is the future of solving complex problems with the right people at the right time in the conversation. We look forward to many more in the future.

The holiday season is upon us. It can be a time of great stress and busyness, but you always have the power to choose. You have a choice to be mindful in everything you do, from each gift you wrap and card you write, to every face and movement you notice as if for the first time. Make some minutes more mindful, or some people, or some tasks. The more you practice, the easier it becomes. Engage with the life you have right here and now, rather than what has been or may yet be.
Things have to change. Sustainability is not just about the climate. It is about resources, and money, and not squandering opportunity to create, not just a healthy environment but a strong culture that can sustain the people we have today and the future. How do we do that when governments run so inefficiently and with so many delays. What has to change? And how?
If you would be loved, then love others. Openly and completely, without a need for repayment or reward. Unconditionally, regardless of sex, religion, stature or status. Without lust or desire, without expectation, but intentionally and fully as if their happiness and well-being mattered more than life itself. If you can move the smallest step closer to that vision, you can change your life for the better, you can change the world.
The more an organization focuses on value and the less they focus on bureaucracy the better chance they have of succeeding. It all starts with choosing the right problem to solve and working until the solution that brings the most value for the customer is realized.
When people have clear instructions and expectations it is true that they get to feel very safe and secure in what they do. Often though they are left frustrated that the decision makers are not instructing them to do the things they see need doing. The biggest problems I see with traditional command and control management structures is the inefficiency, poor quality, and lost productivity that results โ the people in charge are often not involved enough in the actual work to make the best decisions, and the people doing the work donโt feel enough ownership to do more than the instructions strictly ask for.
